Today, Sharon Prior and I had the privilege of accompanying 15 Year 4 and 5 students, competing in two teams, to the Gold Coast First Lego League (FLL) Rookie Event – City Shaper.
Students were challenged to explore real-world issues in urban development, focusing on how to create better buildings and public spaces for communities. With valuable support from Ms B and her Global Citizenship focus, students identified problems within their local school community, designed innovative solutions, and built a robot to complete missions on the themed challenge mat (currently located in the STEM room).
Students were judged across three key areas:
Innovation Project
Students identified a problem with a local building or public space, designed a solution, and then refined it through prototyping, testing, and feedback. At the event, they presented their problem, solutions, and outcomes to a judging panel.
- Team 2 came 3rd overall, showcasing their ideas around water conservation and strategies for preventing and managing leaking taps at school.
Robot Game
Teams designed, built, and programmed a LEGO robot to complete a range of missions on a city-themed challenge mat. Each team had four runs, with their top scores as follows:
- Team 1: 190, 175, 230, 305 (5th overall in the competition)
- Team 2: 155, 255, 270, 290
Core Values
FLL's core values—discovery, innovation, impact, teamwork, inclusion, and fun—were central to the City Shaper challenge.
- Team 2 received the Judges' Award for their overall competitiveness, commitment to core values, innovative solutions, and demonstration of fair play across all events.
A huge congratulations to all students involved for their creativity, teamwork, and resilience throughout the competition!
