Caningeraba students shine on the big stage at the AB Patterson Speaking Competition!
Five talented students. Five bold ideas. Five brave voices. Five minutes to deliver.
Five talented Caningeraba students stepped up to the challenge at the AB Patterson Speaking Competition on 31 August and 1 September, representing our school with pride and confidence. Following an in-school audition process, two Year 5 students and three Year 6 students were selected to compete against 14 schools from across the region.
The competition attracted an exceptionally high calibre of young speakers, with approximately 70 students competing in each year level, spread across 10 heats per year level division, running simultaneously on the first evening. Each student was challenged to deliver a carefully prepared speech based on a provided stimulus, with Year 5 students presenting for four minutes and Year 6 students for five minutes. From each heat, only two students progressed to the semi-finals.
Our students had dedicated much of this term to preparing for the competition. They researched, wrote, edited and rehearsed their speeches, while developing the skills needed to engage an audience through eye contact, vocal expression, gesture and confident delivery.
Our Year 5 representatives, Lara and Mackenzie, delivered thought-provoking speeches. Lara explored The Masks We Wear, using the idea of masks as a metaphor for authenticity and the importance of being your true self. Mackenzie tackled Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder, exploring the difference between physical and inner beauty and drawing on her own experiences as an identical twin.
Our Year 6 speakers, Elki, Bianca and Alice, each selected fascinating and highly relevant topics. Elki's For the Longest Time explored the history of women advocating for their rights and how opportunities that were once closed to women are now opening for future generations. Bianca's If I Were a Journalist I Would Investigate examined the very current issue of social media restrictions for under-16s, questioning how we can ensure these measures are effective and not simply bypassed. Alice's The True Meaning of Success provided a thoughtful reflection on the many different ways success can be defined and how failure can build resilience and become a stepping stone towards future achievement.
All five students demonstrated incredible dedication and commitment throughout their preparation. Their performances showcased not only the quality of their writing and ideas, but also their ability to communicate with confidence, expression and purpose. They were also proud ambassadors for Caningeraba, representing us as one of only two public schools competing in the event.
A special congratulations goes to Bianca and Alice, who were both successful in their heats, receiving high praise from their judges and earning a place in the semi-finals. With only 20 students progressing to the semi-final stage, this was a fantastic achievement. They made some final edits to their speeches and continued rehearsing right up until their performances, working hard to balance memorisation with an engaging and natural delivery.
While our students did not secure one of the highly coveted eight places in the grand final, every one of them should be incredibly proud of what they achieved. They stepped outside their comfort zones, tackled challenging topics, stood in front of large audiences and competed alongside some exceptionally talented young speakers.
Most importantly, they demonstrated the Caningeraba motto of “Success Through Challenge." As Alice reflected in her speech, success is not simply about winning; it is about having the courage to take on a challenge, learning from the experience and becoming better because of it.
