Caningeraba Chess Champions Shine with Strategy, Skill and Sportsmanship

The chess boards were buzzing at Emmanuel College on Tuesday 9 September as Caningeraba State School sent an impressive 8 teams of 32 students to compete in the Term 3 Interschool Chess Tournament.

With approximately 360 students from schools across the Gold Coast in attendance, our students competed across five divisions (A–E), battling it out over seven rounds of chess. From opening moves to tricky endgames, there were plenty of moments that required strategy, patience and a good dose of concentration!

We were incredibly proud of the way all of our students played, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, resilience and respect for their opponents throughout the day. Whether they were celebrating a win, learning from a loss or supporting their teammates, our students represented Caningeraba with enthusiasm and pride.

Individual Achievements

Congratulations to our students who achieved outstanding individual results:

  • A Division: Louie & Sylvie — Merit Ribbons
  • B Division: Noah — Merit Ribbon
  • C Division: Archer & Cohen — Merit Ribbons
  • D Division: Oscar — 3rd Place Bronze Medal
  • E Division: Spencer — 3rd Place Bronze Medal & Jonah — Merit Ribbon

Team Achievements

Our teams also achieved some fantastic results:

  • A Division: Louie, Sylvie, Sean & Zac — Tied 3rd Place (4th on countback)
  • E Division: Spencer, Jonah, Harrison & Bon — 2nd Place

A special thank you goes to Lara, Mia and Sean for volunteering their time to assist some of our first time chess tournament students. Your support helped our less experienced players feel confident and enjoy the experience.

We would also like to give a very special mention to Kahu, who received high praise from a teacher at another school for his inclusivity, kindness and understanding towards other students. This is a wonderful example of the character we value at Caningeraba.

Congratulations to all 32 players on a fantastic day of chess. Checkmate may be the goal, but great sportsmanship is always the real win!
